Who We Are & What We Do

We’re The Hiking Tribe—a free, volunteer-led community built around a simple idea: getting people outdoors and bringing them together. Before we set foot on Country, we acknowledge the many Traditional Owners of the lands we walk across—Wurundjeri, Bunurong, Gunaikurnai, Taungurung, Wadawurrung, Eastern Maar, Dja Dja Wurrung, and the peoples of the Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia, and Jupagalk Nations. We would also like to pay our respects to their Elders, past and present, and Aboriginal Elders of other communities who may be here today. We believe in the power of nature to ground, inspire, and connect. Our tribe is open to everyone—no matter your age, background, or fitness level. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just lacing up your boots for the first time, you'll always have a place with us.Our hikes and walks range from easy-going weekend strolls to more adventurous treks. Along the way, we mix in a little fun, a bit of learning, and a whole lot of community spirit. It’s not just about the distance—it’s about the moments, the connections, and the memories. We want you to head home not just tired and happy, but carrying something meaningful from every experience. A new skill, a new friend, a deeper appreciation for the outdoors—or maybe all three. So come as you are. Walk with us. And let’s explore more—together, and always with respect for the lands and peoples who walked here first. These lands have been cared for and walked across for countless generations, guided by the seasonal knowledge of First Peoples. In the Kulin Nation—whose Country many of our hikes pass through—six seasons are recognised: Biderap (dry), Iuk (signalling cooling weather, eel season), Waring (cold and wombat season), Guling (orchids bloom, longer days return), Poorneet (thunderstorms arrive, tadpole season), and Garrawang (hot wind and fruiting). These seasons reflect deep connections to land, water, plants, and animals—marking times not just by weather, but by story, ceremony, and renewal. As a hiking group, we aim to walk gently on these lands. With every step, we acknowledge that we are guests on Country, walking paths formed long before us, listening and learning as we go.

The Team

Meet Our Team
The Hiking Tribe is proudly run by a passionate volunteer crew made up of Co-Founders, Admins, Founding Members, and Core Members & Moderators. While most of our work happens within our active Facebook group, the impact goes well beyond that.
From planning and running hikes to creating content, sharing photos, managing socials, and dreaming up new ideas—our team works tirelessly behind the scenes to keep things moving. They research and organise events, find meaningful learning opportunities, and connect with partners who share our values. It's not just about managing a group—it's about building a space where people feel welcome, inspired, and connected to both nature and each other. And trust us… it’s a busy job, but one we love.👉 Want to know more about the people behind the tribe?

A Proud Moment for The Tribe 🙂
Bushwalking Victoria invited us to share our story — how The Hiking Tribe began, what sparked the idea, and how this little dream turned into a vibrant, diverse community that loves the Aussie outdoors. 🥾🌏
We also spoke about something close to our hearts — how bushwalking can play a role in helping new immigrants connect, feel welcome, and grow their confidence in the outdoors. Plus, we shared tips for other clubs keen to do the same.
Big thanks to Gio (Secretary), Robyn (President), Richelle (Executive Officer), and Bron for giving us this opportunity. You’ve given our Tribe a voice in the wider bushwalking community, and we’re grateful.
The full session went for 33 mins, but we’ve trimmed it down to 10 mins to give you a sneak peek.
🎥 Watch the video, feel the vibes, and be proud to be part of something special.

SBS
We’re incredibly grateful to have been featured by SBS, who shared the story of The Hiking Tribe and how it’s helping migrants and outdoor lovers find connection, belonging, and a love for nature.
The article highlights the heart behind our community—bringing people together through hiking, creating space to breathe, share stories, and explore the outdoors. SBS also captured the spirit of one of our hikes in a beautiful short video.

Demonstrating Commitment: Hassan Volunteers with SES
We’re stoked to share that our co-founder Hassan has officially joined the State Emergency Service (SES)!
Volunteering with SES is one of the best ways to give back to the community—and it’s a natural next step for someone who’s always been committed to protecting people and the places we explore. From leading hikes to now helping in emergencies, Hassan’s journey reflects what The Hiking Tribe is all about: adventure with purpose.
Let’s keep showing that loving nature also means looking after each other

Community Recognition for Najam
Big cheers to Najam, one of The Hiking Tribe’s co-founders, who’s been featured by the City of Whittlesea in their local newsletter and social media for his role in the Community Leadership Program!
We’re proud to see our crew getting recognised not just for what we do on the trails—but also for the impact we’re making off them. This recognition is a reminder that leadership, nature, and giving back go hand in hand.

Group Adventures Aren’t Solo MissionsThere’s something special about walking, hiking, or getting outdoors together. The laughs, the chats, the shared views, the snack breaks – that’s the real beauty of group hiking. But every now and then, someone races ahead, turning a group experience into a solo mission. So let’s set some expectations before we hit the trail. We hike at the pace of the slowest – and that’s a good thing.
Group hiking isn’t a race. It’s designed so no one gets left behind – full stop. Our leaders stay with the slowest hiker because safety and inclusion matter most. If you're super fit or itching to go solo, that’s totally cool – but group hiking might not be your thing that day. If you're with the group, you’re with the group.
Read the event description – every time.
We always list the difficulty grade, but from now on we’ll clearly mention whether an event is beginner-friendly or more suited for experienced hikers. If a hike is challenging, steep, or long – it’ll say so. So please read the event description properly and decide wisely. Showing up to a hard hike expecting a cruisy walk doesn’t end well for anyone.
We stick together, or we agree to split – in advance.
Sometimes splitting into two groups makes sense – one for the cruisers, one for the speedy types – but this has to be discussed and agreed before the hike starts. Don’t go rogue mid-track. It puts others in a tricky spot and defeats the point of a group activity.
Group hiking is about patience, connection, and shared energy.
It’s not just about getting to the summit – it’s about the people around you. The chats, the breathers, the little moments you miss when you’re charging ahead on your own.
Final word? Respect the group, respect the plan.
We’re out here to enjoy nature together. So match the pace, read the details, and come with the right mindset. The trail will always be there – but these shared memories? That’s the good stuff.
And yes – we get it, exceptions happen.
Sometimes someone needs to leave early, make it to an appointment, or answer nature’s call – that’s life. If you’re confident to walk solo or want to take someone with you, just have a quick chat with the leader or organiser first. We also list the event duration after careful planning, so if you’ve got time constraints, always check that in advance or talk to us before the day.
We’re all for flexibility – just let’s keep it safe, respectful, and fun for everyone.
